Over time, we’re going to introduce our members by way of a series of questions we’ve put to them; they’ve kindly agreed to let us publish their answers. On this occasion, it’s the turn of Steven Wilkinson
How long have you been a member:
Why did you start:
Got Paul Cook to thank for that! I have been running for 25 years now, but that was just me going out on my own to keep fit and doing the odd local race. I did actually try the Harriers in the mid to late 90’s, remember Paul Kelly and Alison Raw there but there weren’t many others! I struggled a bit in the session and thought it wasn’t for me, but then about 20 years later after a chance contact from Paul I thought I’d try it again and here I am!
Favourite type of running (Road, XC, T&F, Fell etc):
I will say Road as most of my races and training are on them, but must admit I did a season of XC and did enjoy it in a perverse way, and love the Cleveland Way relays now too on the trails.
Best event you’ve taken part in (and why):
I guess the obvious one, and rightly so, was my first marathon in London in 2018 (yes the hot one!). I’d always had doing a marathon on my bucket list but if you’d asked me 5 years ago I never ever thought Id do one or would be capable. The crowds at London are amazing and to be part of it takes your breath away – in many ways!! Crossing the finish line was an emotional moment and one I will never forget.
Event you’re looking forward to (and why):
The next one that is on!! I was due to the London marathon again in April so I guess that in October, if it goes ahead.
What’s on your headphones while you train:
I don’t listen to anything when running these days, just my surroundings.
Favourite training session (and why):
Can’t really say I have one? Any session that afterwards I feel went well and I picked up no injuries from is a good one!
Do you take your trainers on holiday? If yes, where is the best place you’ve trained/ran?:
Yes I have done in the past when in Spain just to see what it feels like running in such a hot conditions.
Pre race food & drink of choice:
Based on a morning race I’d say a bowl of cereal, bagel and a coffee plus some water.
Post race food & drink of choice:
Something sweet to replace those lost calories! Water or an isotonic drink after a run.
Favourite place to run:
Always nice to go out in the countryside, not that it happens too often. Since taking part in the Cleveland Way relays the last few years, some of the scenery we have close by is stunning to run along. Some would say I should have said Blaydon after doing 20 plus Blaydon races mind!!
Best Club related memory:
Lots of good memories, but the London marathon weekend, and the Berlin marathon weekend last year definitely stand out as does completing the the Lyke Wake challenge, all done with some great people.
If you could go for a long chatty run with anyone, who would it be and why:
Tough one? Maybe the comedian Bob Mortimer, so we could chat all things Boro and I’m sure he’d be very funny too!
