Over time, we’re going to introduce our members by way of a series of questions we’ve put to them; they’ve kindly agreed to let us publish their answers. On this occasion, it’s the turn of Dan Boyer
How long have you been a member:
Why did you start:
I came from a swimming background originally but competed in the school XC races. In year 9 I finally got onto the Durham team for XC despite very limited training. I ended up joining the local tri club and then also joined the Harriers to further improve my running and I’ve never really looked back since.
Favourite type of running (Road, XC, T&F, Fell etc):
Road and XC
Best event you’ve taken part in (and why):
For me it would have to be School Games Final down in Loughborough representing the North East. I had one of my best performances and it was also such a great experience with everything from the organisation to the racing feeling like a professional race. Fair to say I’ll never experience anything like it again in my life!
Event you’re looking forward to (and why):
Any 5/10k road race that will possibly (fingers crossed) be happening. I’m looking forward to try and beat my pr’s.
What’s on your headphones while you train:
Rap/R&B/Alt.rock with a good beat and a good vibe to get me though an easy/long run.
Favourite training session (and why):
A 4-6 mile tempo run is my favourite because I find it easy to settle into a rhythm and just ‘float‘ along at the correct pace. I also enjoy sessions such as 5x1k or 4×800,3×600,4×400.
Do you take your trainers on holiday? If yes, where is the best place you’ve trained/ran?:
Most of the time I take them even if I only end up doing a couple runs to tick over. The best place I’ve trained would have to be in the Andalucia region of Spain on a training camp despite me coming home absolutely spent!
Pre race food & drink of choice:
Toast with peanut butter and jam and water
Post race food & drink of choice:
Chicken Curry or Sunday Dinner, Chocolate and a Cup of Tea/Coffee
Favourite place to run:
Along the trails around Darlington. I just like the peacefulness and serenity of the countryside as it really helps to clear my mind.
Best Club related memory:
The third place in the U17 Northern Road Relays. It was such a good day with me, John and Adam all having great legs and we also got on the podium against some tough competition.
If you could go for a long chatty run with anyone, who would it be and why:
For me it would have to be my training partners (the Russell twins) as I don’t think they would lack on the chatty side of things! They are also the best two lads to train with and I think it’s fair to say I’m missing them quite a bit at the moment in quarantine.
Describe our club in three words:
Competitive. Fun. Enjoyable.
