Juniors Impress At Gateshead

The daffodils may be out and the recent sunny spell tells us summer is on the way, but last Sunday’s Gateshead Open was a stark reminder that winter has not long gone! The strong breeze made it feel like December again and athletes had to stay wrapped up, but there was still a decent turnout, including several of our own Junior Harriers.

Under 13’s We’re used to seeing a whole host of Under13’s from our junior squad, but today, it was our multi-eventer, Tori Buckley who was the only representative from this age group. This time she was focussing on her field events with the high jump, shot putt and javelin. In the high jump it couldn’t have been much closer; all four competitors jumped the same height of 1.25m. Excellent jumping from Tori with this being her best outdoor jump to date and only 3cm off her PB of 1.28m which she did indoors.

When competitors jump the same height it’s all down to which athlete had the least attempts – today it was South Shields and Tynedale tying for the top spot, with Tori and the Blyth athlete tying for joint 3rd place. In the shot putt she produced another strong throw of 5.98m; not a PB but another great effort and enough to take 2nd place! Finally, one of Tori’s favourite events, the javelin. Once again, putting that Valhalla training to good use she produced some tremendous throws, her best on the day being 19.66m making Tori the clear winner! Overall, an impressive performance adding to what’s already been a very promising start to this outdoor season. Well done, “Buckers!

Under15’s Like Tori, Kate Williams was the only Darlington Harrier in her age group. In her first season as an Under 15 she’s already made an impact, and certainly holding her own against the older athletes. Today was no different; in the 100m she came a close 2nd, only 0.34s behind the winner…..and in the 200m, in what turned out to be the fastest heat she came even closer – 2nd place again, only 0.15s behind the winner! Super sprinting, Kate, keepup the good work!

Under 17’s It was a one, two for DHAC in the women’s 80m hurdles, with Charlotte Rutter and Logan Fawcett both in fine form. Now that the girls have moved up to Under 17 there’s an extra 5m to contend with so it was nice to see them doing so well. Charlotte was first across the line today in 12.7s, followed by Logan in a close 2nd place. Great hurdling girls, well done. Liam Brittle was also in action, this time in the 1500m. It was an impressive run which resulted in a comfortable victory, crossing the line in 4:45.30. A great effort Liam, well done!

Under 20’s Another Darlington Harrier moving up to a new age group is our throwing expert, Jasmine Sharp. Today it was the javelin and she performed admirably, coming away with 2nd place after an excellent throw of 33.26m. A great result for her first outing this season. Well done, Jasmine!
A fantastic effort from our juniors. Certainly not the right conditions for PB’s today, but an excellent all round effort resulting in some impressive results. Well done to all.
