Bell ‘n’ Buckers Do York

While some of our juniors were busy at Cudworth, you might think the rest of them were sat at home with their feet up…..but not Olivia Bell and Tori Buckley! In fact, just the day before, they were both playing for Darlington FC U14 Girls, but today they got their running gear on and set off to York for the final meeting of the City of York Athletics Summer League.

It was a well organised, yet very relaxed meeting, with a great turnout of athletes from around the region, and our two girls from ‘north of the border’ were made very welcome…..and what an excellent venue; everything nice and new and a track with lots of bounce! Similar to Cudworth, the wind certainly played it’s part, especially on the bend of the 200m! But the sun shone, for most of the time anyway, and a good day was had by all.

Under13Girls Tori originally planned to compete in the 100m, the 200m and the long jump. But on checking the timetable, the 100m clashed with the long jump (as it often does!) so on this occasion she decided to drop the 100m and just concentrate on the two events. First up was the long jump; an event in which Tori’s been consistently good just recently, showing excellent technique and a run up that’s bang on! It was a huge field of 23 with some top athletes amongst them, but yet again Tori jumped well, with a best of 3.85m being just 2cm short of her PB, leaving her in 10th place. Desperate to beat her PB of 30.2s, Tori’s next event was the 200m – but it wasn’t going to be easy fighting against that strong wind on the bend. She ran a terrific race and frustratingly, equalled her PB, finishing in 4th place of Heat 2. Had conditions been different we think that 30 second barrier would’ve beensmashed! Next time, Buckers! Well done anyway, another fantastic performance!
Under15 Girls Olivia was up for 3 events today; the shot put, the 100m and 200m. First up was the shot, and with a few Valhalla sessions under her belt she was quietly confident of beating her PB. First throw – job done! Not only did she break her PB, she got past the 7m barrier with an excellent throw of 7.03m. This turned out to be her best throw of the day, leaving her in 6th place. Next the 100m, and with the wind constantly changing direction it was pot luck whether it was going to help or hinder you. Unfortunately for Olivia when she ran there was a slight head wind so times were nothing to shout about, but on the other hand she ran well and managed to cross the line in 1st place of Heat 2! So onto Olivia’s final event, the 200m, and another strong run. Like Tori’s 200 it was tough on the bend but she pushed hard and crossed the line in 3rd place in a time of 29.54s. Afterwards she said it felt slow – PB’s don’t come easy anyway but some days the conditions are just against you, but well done, Olivia, an excellent all round performance!
